I had this thought while pondering my career in film. First I like to relate being a filmmaker a lot like being a starving artist, you need a job to support yourself while you work on your art. My thought though comes from reflecting on how I have gotten here today as I try and build this film career after school. While getting my B.A. in Film I met a lot of teachers & people in the industry. It frustrated me that no one really offered any sensible and definitive advice on getting a solid start in the business. They all have suggestions, but these are more like opinions. Every one gives a certain outlook, but then most of them have still to really make it also. So, I often spent time researching how directors & producers I admire have walked the path of film. Still, it is always a different story and just a lot of good suggestions that follow. There is a recurring perplexed look that comes over the face of any instructor when the question of making a career in film is asked of them. The obvious helpful hints are to intern at a company, make a reel, network, and so on. This is good advice, but it's just part of the game and not much help. The thought that came to my mind was that a career in the motion picture industry is not a linear path. While getting my education, things were simple, my path was lined up (linear), and I knew what to do, what was expected of me, and what was needed to do to keep on the linear path to my degree. Had I followed a degree in science, business, technology, law or education, my path to my career would still be linear. However this is not the case. Why? Because filmmaking is a NON-LINEAR path. This is why everyone's story in making it in the business of movies is a different and unique story, personal to them. You can not follow the same path. Even if you follow the trail left, it will not lead to the same results. Unlike traditional careers, this is not linear. It is abstract. This is why instructors and others in the industry always have a puzzled look of perplexity on their faces when you ask them for advice, and they only follow up with the usual answers of intern, reel, network. How can you explain something that exists in the abstract. Once I began to change my way of looking at my career in film with linear focused eyes and began to look at it with a non-linear view of perception; I've begun to see the way to creating my success in motion pictures is going to be by being open and available to all the possibilities that are potentially all around me. This explains why there is such a thing as the overnight successes in this career path, as well as successes that come over time, and even the way that a success might lead to a career failure, or a failure might lead to a successful career. There is no logic in a non-linear path. There is no trail to follow. No one can lead you there. I must take the lead. It is a path that requires many leaps of faith. A film education is like a Wizard's initiation in Wizard school, he or she has been taught and has taken the tests, but now they have to go out and live the Magic. In this case it is for me to go out and live the Movie Magic. It is an adventure where every tomorrow in the world of Cinema arts is a brush stoke on the abstract painting's canvas of my own unique career portrait. |

The path of being a filmmaker is a quest. It is a quest of discovery with many hidden passages that lead to places of light & shadows. There are perils and dangers that can come up at any turn. This is the path of the seeker, & the warrior. The path is a search for truth within the self through the mirror reflection of what you see shining back at you from the screen. It takes courage and you must reach in deeply to find the magic of inspiration. Success is for the few that can stay on the path and not fall the way of the slain warrior. Filmmaking is one of the most difficult & yet rewarding paths to thread. |

Thank you to every one who has watched my movies. It means the world to me to know that my work is entertaining others. Filmmaking started out in the short film form as far back as 1899, so it is a powerful motivation for me to be a part of that original history of the short film form in today's technologically digital universe, which is transforming how cinema is watched and made today.
